"Pecan trees were planted to make a subdivision that was unique in Southeast Texas."

Groves, Texas is the third largest city in Jefferson County. In the words of our city manager, D.E. Sosa---Groves is "a great place to live, work, learn, shop and conduct business." This warm, friendly, well-kept community of 16,000  is nestled between Port Arthur and Port Neches in the heart of Jefferson County.

Groves had its beginning in when Asa E. Groves looked longingly at the wide expanse of land east of Griffing Nursery. He formed a company and purchased 300 acres in the center of present day Groves.

Family entertainment is provided each year with the Texas Pecan Festival, which commemorates the planting of hundreds of  pecan trees ordered by Asa Groves and planted by Wiley Choate, a foreman at Griffing Nursery. Many of these trees are still standing, making the city one of the loveliest in the area.

With Lake Sabine at its doorstep, Groves offers all the relaxation that water recreation brings. This unique community is  growing and facing the future with optimism.

The city's rich heritage can be sampled with a visit to the Groves Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Center at 4399 Main Avenue. The structure is a turn-of the century vintage home and remains virtually unchanged today from its original design.

Pecans, Parades and Pigskins:

The 72nd Texas Legislature recognized Groves' annual pecan celebration as the official Texas Pecan Festival. It commemorates the harvest from over 2500 pecan trees which were planted in Groves around the turn of the century. The family oriented event includes crowning a Pecan Queen, carnival, parade, concessions and art and crafts.

Once a month, merchants along Lincoln Avenue encourage after hours browsing while the family is entertained with magic, moonwalks, unique parades, music and street vendors. It all takes place on the First Friday of each month.

Each fall heralds the return of the Port Neches-Groves Indians. The local high school football team is a perennial powerhouse in district play and draws huge community support.
